Food Combining

  • If you eat fruit, don’t eat anything else with it. Eat fruit mainly in the morning, and do not combine different fruits.
  • Melons: Eat them alone or leave them alone!
  • Eating fruit is fine up to 30 minutes BEFORE a meal. AFTER a non-fruit meal, wait 3 hours before eating fruit.
  • Eat fruits that are less sweet (e.g., Granny Smith apples, grapefruit).
  • If you eat cereals for breakfast, don’t eat fruit with it.
  • Never eat animal source proteins – fish, fowl, eggs, dairy, pork, red meat – within 3 hours of eating starches (e.g., potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, crackers).
  • Unless your metabolic type requires it, avoid eating meat at lunch. Eat veggies and salads. Starches may be eaten at this time.
  • If you don’t know your metabolic type, the best animal source protein is fish. Second best is chicken, and third best is turkey. Deer and pork are both hard to assimilate.
  • Animal source proteins combine well with lean vegetables (e.g., broccoli, salads, squash, kale, green beans, spinach, cauliflower).
  • Try to rotate foods eaten every 3 to 4 days. If you eat the same food every day, you may develop allergies.
